Would you like to cut down on coffee or simply try something new – without giving up your caffeinated morning ritual? Then tea is an exciting alternative. Here you’ll find out which types of tea contain caffeine and what to bear in mind when preparing them.

Which teas contain caffeine?

Caffeine is found in the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) – so in black tea, green tea, matcha, oolong and white tea. Maté also naturally contains caffeine. Herbal teas, fruit teas and rooibos, on the other hand, are usually caffeine-free.

How much caffeine ends up in your cup depends on several factors: the type of tea, the amount, the water temperature and the steeping time. Young leaves and buds usually contain more caffeine than older leaves.

Matcha: the classic among coffee alternatives

For matcha, the tea plants are shaded before harvest. The whole leaf is then finely ground – so you drink the entire leaf. This makes matcha particularly intense in taste. Our Natural Matcha High combines two types of green tea with matcha and lemongrass – grassy, fresh and with natural caffeine.

Maté: the South American alternative

Maté is brewed from the leaves of the South American maté shrub and has a centuries-old tradition there. Maté contains natural caffeine and tastes tart and spicy. You’ll find it, for example, in our New Happy Me with nettle and sweet fennel.

Tip: how the steeping time affects your tea

The longer black or green tea steeps, the more tannins are released – the tea then tastes stronger and more tart. For a milder taste, choose a shorter steeping time. You’ll find the exact recommendation on each of our packs.

Tea or coffee?

Fans can debate for hours whether tea or coffee is the better drink – in the end, your taste decides. If you fancy an alternative with natural caffeine, why not try Natural Matcha High or New Happy Me.

Note: pregnant and breastfeeding women and people sensitive to caffeine should keep an eye on their caffeine intake.
