At Urban Tea Factory, all the teas, herbs and spices in our blends come from certified organic farming. But what exactly does “organic” mean – and who checks it? Here we explain it briefly and clearly.
What does “organic” mean for tea?
“Organic” (“Bio” and “Öko” in German) are protected terms in the EU. They may only be used if a food has been produced in accordance with the EU organic regulation (EU) 2018/848. For cultivation this means, among other things:
- no chemical-synthetic pesticides
- no mineral nitrogen fertiliser
- no genetic engineering
- crop rotation and organic fertilisation to care for the soil
Who checks this?
All businesses along the supply chain – from cultivation and processing to packing – are regularly inspected by state-approved organic control bodies. We, too, are inspected as the producer of our tea blends. Our organic control body: DE-ÖKO-037 (EU/non-EU agriculture).
The EU organic logo
The green EU organic logo with the stars in the shape of a leaf is mandatory on all packaged organic foods. Below it you will find the code number of the control body and the origin of the ingredients (“EU agriculture”, “non-EU agriculture” or both).
Why we choose organic
For us, organic is the foundation of honest tea enjoyment: traceable origin, clear rules and independent inspections. We also do without artificial flavourings in our blends and let the ingredients speak for themselves.
